Sophie Griffis set a specific numerical target for her swimming season this year: breaking the one-minute barrier in the 100-yard backstroke. Achieving that time would qualify her for the state championship meet. The senior at Strawberry Crest High School has already competed at the district level and is currently focused on improving her performance during the upcoming regional competitions.
Griffis has been competing in the sport since she was eight years old. She describes swimming as the one activity she excelled at after trying other sports as an only child. She currently balances two competitive schedules, swimming for her high school team while also training year-round for the Blue Wave swim team.
Her most recent peak performance occurred during the Spring 2026 Area 3 Championship meet in St. Petersburg. During that event, she recorded personal best times in seven out of eight of her races. Griffis noted that dropping even one second in a swim race represents a major accomplishment for competitive swimmers. She considers that weekend her greatest victory to date, despite facing lower-level competition than in other meets.
The training regimen required to maintain these standards is demanding. She trains six or seven days a week and performs double practices on three of those days. Her schedule involves an early morning session from 5:15 to 6:45 a.m. before school, followed by an afternoon session from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. She believes that spending more time in the water than other athletes is necessary for improvement.
Griffis also competes in the 200-yard breaststroke, which is not a standard high school event. She participates in that race only at club swim meets. She prefers that distance because it avoids the brevity of sprint races and the length of longer endurance events.
She plans to continue swimming after high school graduation. Her goal is to either join a collegiate competitive team or maintain her fitness on a club team at her university. Outside of the pool, she spends her free time serving at Grace City Church, visiting the beach, and shopping with her mother.
The next major milestone for her season is the regional meet, where she will attempt to refine her times further. Her immediate objective remains the sub-60 100-yard backstroke, a mark that has historically served as the gateway to state-level competition for her.
