San Antonio police identified Jacob Luna, 31, as the man who exchanged gunfire with four officers late Sunday evening. The incident unfolded near the 1700 block of Horal Drive around 6:15 p.m., according to a department update.

Detectives working undercover were monitoring Luna, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for a narcotics offense. Officers observed him display a firearm through his vehicle window. After Luna began firing, the four officers returned the shots.

Luna fled the scene in his car, police said. He was involved in multiple collisions before striking a tree. He exited the vehicle on foot and collapsed a short distance from the crash site.

Officers took Luna into custody and found he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities indicated he is expected to survive.

No officers were injured in the exchange, the department stated. Each of the four officers has between eight and 10 years of service. They have been placed on administrative duty pending further review.

Luna faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.
