The Milwaukee Brewers secured a 3-0 lead in the World Series after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night. The victory moved the Brewers one game away from their first championship in franchise history. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night.
The deciding factor was the top of the fifth inning. Milwaukee scored eight runs in that single frame. This marked the first eight-run inning in World Series history. The Brewers finished the game with 16 hits. Their team batting average was .390. Statcast data shows their expected batting average for the game was only .254.
Tampa Bay struggled to find any rhythm against Milwaukee’s pitching staff. The Rays finished with a team batting average of .107. Their expected batting average was .236. They managed only one hit in the first six innings. Their only run came in the bottom of the ninth as a result of a defensive miscue.
Robert Gasser delivered a six-inning shutout performance for Milwaukee. He allowed only one hit. His opponent had a batting average on balls in play of .071 against him. Gasser struck out just three batters. He became the first left-handed pitcher to throw six shutout innings while facing the minimum number of hitters in the World Series since Sandy Koufax.
The offensive surge began with Jackson Chourio singling with one out. Christian Yelich walked to load the bases. Brice Turang followed with a ground ball that scored two runs. Garrett Mitchell singled through the infield. Cooper Pratt hit a double. Sal Frelick added a single. David Hamilton drove in the ninth run. Chourio finished the inning with another single.
Milwaukee has won 10 of 11 games in the 2026 postseason. The team swept the National League Championship Series. A win on Tuesday would make them the first team to sweep both the NLCS and the World Series. Their current record is 10-1. A victory in Game 4 would improve that to 11-1.
The Rays had limited success at the plate throughout the series. In the top of the second inning, outfielder Chandler Simpson made a diving catch in left field to rob Sal Frelick of a hit. Catcher Nick Fortes threw out Garrett Mitchell attempting to steal second base. These defensive plays kept Tampa Bay in the game early, but the offensive disparity proved too large to overcome.
