Gerardo Segundo, a 21-year-old Harris County detention officer, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated after crashing into a residential fence and leaving the scene early Sunday morning in Humble.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Segundo has served as a detention officer for three years and is currently on administrative leave while his court case is pending.

Alfonso Pineda, who owns the home, said the crash woke his family around 1:50 a.m. He described the sound of an engine revving and tires spinning before a loud impact struck the fence. Pineda stated that the driver had fled by the time he went outside, leaving a truck bumper and other vehicle debris at the site.

Court records indicate that deputies from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office tracked a liquid trail from the crash site to a house located a few streets away. They discovered a damaged pickup truck at that residence and transported it to the crash scene to match the remaining parts.

Segundo refused a field sobriety test but was still charged with DWI. Court documents note that officers observed bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol on the suspect.

A magistrate dismissed a second charge of criminal mischief during a probable cause hearing. The judge ruled that prosecutors had not provided enough evidence to support the claim that Segundo intentionally damaged the fence.

Pineda estimated the repair costs for the fence at $3,000. He noted that his truck was parked only a few feet from where the pickup hit the wall, where he and his wife had been sleeping. No attorney for Segundo was listed in online records, and no one answered the door at his home on Monday.
