Quince is positioning its lab-grown diamond engagement rings as an affordable entry point for the growing online market. The company offers stones ranging from $900 to $5,000, utilizing a factory-direct model to eliminate supply chain middlemen. Kylie Bee, the Merchandise Lead of Fine Jewelry at Quince, stated that all engagement rings can be returned or exchanged within 60 days, backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

The shift toward online purchasing mirrors a broader change in when people get engaged. While summer remains a popular wedding season, proposals now occur in every month of the year. Celebrities have normalized off-season engagement, with Travis Kelce proposing to Taylor Swift in mid-summer and Tom Holland and Zendaya announcing their engagement during winter. This trend has diminished the traditional reliance on Valentine’s Day for ring shopping.

Online retailers are adapting to these preferences by offering extensive customization and detailed guidance. Blue Nile holds the widest selection of engagement rings online, providing ethically sourced diamonds with free engraving and a lifetime warranty. The company ships rings in deluxe presentation boxes that include appraisal certificates and diamond grading reports.

Other brands focus on specific aesthetics or materials. Kinn Studio targets a modern aesthetic with chunkier gold styles, including cigar bands and thick bezel settings. Angara specializes in made-to-order gemstone rings, such as sapphires and emeralds, with prices spanning from a few hundred dollars to over $100,000. Jean Dousset highlights its Claire Collection, which features ultra-thin prongs designed to make the center stone appear to float.

Sustainability and manufacturing origin are key differentiators for several competitors. Plum Diamonds is a women-owned business that exclusively uses lab-grown diamonds, crafting rings from scratch in 15 to 17 business days. Vrai produces lab-grown diamonds in an American foundry using zero-emission river energy, claiming each carat helps save the climate. Catbird sets and hand-finishes its rings in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn studio using 100 percent recycled solid 14k gold or platinum.

Mejuri offers handcrafted pieces in solid gold and sterling silver, limited in customization to metal color and free engraving. MiaDonna provides premium lab-grown diamonds with a lifetime warranty, 60-day returns, and 90-day complimentary resizing. These retailers compete by offering financing options and virtual appointments to assist shoppers who prefer digital interaction over in-store visits.

Experts advise buyers to measure ring sizes using inexpensive sizer tools or by tracing a borrowed ring. Bee recommends consulting friends and family to determine preferred diamond shapes, carat weights, and metal colors. Shoppers should verify if a specific style allows for resizing by up to a full size before finalizing a purchase. Understanding return policies and warranties is essential before making an investment in online jewelry.
