Seven people were wounded in a shooting near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington early Sunday, according to police. The incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. in the area of Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street.
Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo said officers heard "multiple gunshots" while a large crowd was gathered nearby. Witnesses told police they saw a man with a gun running from the area.
Officers detained one person and found a gun close by. Pedigo said investigators do not yet know whether the detained person is the one who fired the shots. That person was booked into jail on a preliminary charge of resisting law enforcement and a charge related to possession of a firearm. Pedigo added that the person already faces a pending felony weapons charge in Hendricks County.
Police said the victims include four males and three females, ranging in age from 17 to 27. All of them are reported to be from the Indianapolis area.
"None of the injured individuals are believed to be students at Indiana University and those that provided a statement to detectives stated that they had come to Bloomington to party and celebrate Halloween," Pedigo said.
All seven victims were last reported to be in stable condition. Three of them needed surgery.
Investigators found shell casings from two different guns at the scene. The total number of shots fired is not known, though witnesses told investigators they heard between four and six shots.
The investigation is ongoing. Officers are going through surveillance video gathered from locations along Kirkwood Avenue after the shooting. The story is still developing, and the information was first reported by NBC sister station WTHR.
