Apple has entered the foldable smartphone category today with a worldwide retail rollout, bringing the device to store shelves in cities across the globe. The company confirmed the debut of the iPhone Duo at its retail locations on Friday, October 23.
The launch transformed stores into gathering places for enthusiasts eager to get their hands on the new technology. Staff members were on hand to provide hands-on demonstrations and shopping assistance to customers who filled the aisles. Images released by the company and shared by observers depict long lines forming outside the flagship Fifth Avenue location in New York City and other major retail outlets.
While the device is now available in person, the supply of units ready for immediate purchase was not enough to meet the demand. Apple had previously issued a warning regarding inventory levels, noting that stock for walk-in customers would be limited. That caution proved accurate, as store employees reported that the available units were quickly claimed.
Shoppers who arrived without a pre-order found themselves unable to purchase a phone on the spot. Staff members have directed those who missed out to monitor the Apple Store application for the latest data. Inventory details for in-store purchases are scheduled to be updated tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET.
The company is marking the release with a high-profile presence at its retail locations. Greg Joswiak, the senior vice president of worldwide marketing, is on site at the Fifth Avenue store in New York City. He is joined by Vanessa Trigub, an executive overseeing retail operations.
In Texas, Apple CEO John Ternus is leading the festivities at the Apple Domain NORTHSIDE location in Austin. He is appearing alongside Deirdre O’Brien, the company's retail chief. Ternus visited Apple's offices in Austin earlier this week.
The Austin launch coincides with a major sporting event in the city. The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in Austin this weekend. Apple is the exclusive provider of Formula 1 streaming services in the United States.
For now, customers interested in purchasing a device without a reservation are being advised to wait for the next inventory update. The company will release details regarding in-store availability through its application tomorrow morning.
