Manchester United fans boo squad after worst league start in four decades
A 3-0 loss to Bournemouth sparked the first collective boos for the players, with eight Premier League strikers now outscoring United's leading goal-scorer.

Manchester United fans booed their entire squad off the pitch following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The result extended the club's worst start to a league season in 40 years. The reaction marked a historic break in tradition, as United supporters had never previously turned on both the manager and the players simultaneously in the same match.
Michael Carrick received cheers as he left the field, while the rest of the team faced sustained booing. The performance on Sunday followed a loss to Como in the Champions League earlier that week. The defeats have cast doubt on the futures of the manager, the ownership group, and the senior management staff.
The attacking drought is a central issue for the club. Since Cristiano Ronaldo departed in November 2022, United has struggled to find a consistent goal-scorer. Rasmus Hojlund was sent back to Italy after failing to produce enough goals. Benjamin Sesko arrived in the summer of 2025 as a major investment, but injuries have limited his impact this season.
Bryan Mbeumo currently leads the team with four goals. Eight other players in the Premier League have scored more than Mbeumo this season. The source notes that all eight of those players would likely start for United.
The club has also failed to sign a left-back during the recent transfer window. Lewis Hall of Newcastle United was heavily linked with a move, but no deal was completed. This lack of depth prompted defender Lisandro Martinez to criticize the hierarchy after the loss to Atletico Madrid. Martinez argued that the club had not invested enough in the squad during the summer.
Tensions between the manager and the team's star player, Bruno Fernandes, have also risen. Fernandes was booed after the Bournemouth match despite not playing. The crowd reacted to his public criticism of Carrick's tactical choices in the Como game. Fernandes, 32, won the PFA Player of the Year award last season for recording the Premier League record for assists in a single campaign.
The ownership structure remains a point of contention for supporters. The Glazer family has held a stake since 2005. Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group invested heavily two years ago, leading to off-field cost cuts and proposals to rebuild Old Trafford. Fans and players view both Ratcliffe and the Glazers unfavorably. Gary Neville, a former defender for the club, alleged on Sky Sports on Sunday that certain members of the current squad lack professionalism.
The club faces a decision on its tactical identity in the coming weeks. Past attempts to change the style under Louis van Gaal, Ruben Amorim, and other managers have led to internal friction. The team currently lacks a unified playing style, which has alienated a fan base known for its loyalty to the club's attacking heritage.
