Walter Koenig, the actor who portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov on Star Trek: The Original Series, has died at the age of 90. A representative for the family announced on Tuesday that Koenig died of natural causes on Sunday at his residence in North Hollywood.

Koenig joined the production of the original series in 1967 for its second season. He acted alongside William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, for the remainder of the show's three-season run from 1966 to 1969. The two performers also shared screen time in six subsequent Star Trek feature films.

Shatner addressed the news on X on Tuesday, stating that he was "deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing." He noted that while their off-set relationship was limited, they collaborated extensively on the later seasons of the series and the films. Shatner described Koenig as a man who genuinely loved the fan community, observing that the actor preferred interacting with attendees at conventions over sitting at signing tables.

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu for all three seasons of the original series, also posted a tribute on Facebook on Monday. Takei described Koenig as a writer, teacher, and loyal friend. He thanked the fans for their years of support and closed with the message, "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."

Koenig's career began in theater and television before his breakout role in the 1960s science fiction series. His character, Chekov, served as a young officer on the USS Enterprise. The actor remained a recognizable figure in popular culture following the original broadcast, appearing in various media projects and fan events throughout his life.
