Anticipation for Anthropic’s upcoming public listing has intensified, with the artificial intelligence company expected to debut this year at a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion. While the final share price remains to be determined, the trajectory of the firm’s growth has already generated substantial wealth for its investors. Even at the most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the holdings of prominent venture capitalists and early backers collectively amount to billions of dollars.

The financial gains for these stakeholders vary based on their entry points. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, participated in the 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this minority stake is worth nearly $10 billion, representing a significant return on his initial investment.

Later-stage investors have also seen their portfolios expand considerably. Iconiq Capital issued a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year, a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That substantial investment is currently valued at $17 billion, with analysts suggesting it could double once the IPO is completed. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has invested over $1 billion in total. Its current position in the company is valued at $14 billion.

Sequoia Capital entered the investment landscape more recently, backing the firm earlier this year when its valuation had climbed to $380 billion. The $3 billion investment secured approximately 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has increased its exposure significantly. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million. Although Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, the original stake remains worth billions.

Perhaps the most dramatic return belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C round, which valued the company at just $5 billion. That early position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to an estimated $7 billion. These figures illustrate the staggering upside potential for investors who entered the market during the AI boom’s early phases.

As the company prepares for its public offering, the focus will shift from private valuation metrics to public market performance. The anticipated IPO represents a pivotal moment for the AI sector, potentially setting new benchmarks for technology valuations. For the backers listed here, the coming months will determine whether their current multi-billion dollar stakes continue to appreciate or stabilize at the new public price point.

The structure of these investments highlights the diverse strategies employed by venture capital firms. From early bets at sub-$1 billion valuations to massive late-stage injections at nearly $200 billion, each stake carries different risk and reward profiles. The upcoming listing will serve as the final test of these strategies, converting private equity gains into liquid public assets for a wide range of institutional and individual investors.
