Tampa Bay's return to the World Series has generated substantial advertising revenue for local broadcasters, with FOX 13 dominating the regional television market during the opening weekend.
WTVT FOX 13 recorded a 12.1 household rating and a 41 share for Game 1. Game 2 saw a slight dip in the household rating to 11.8, but the share increased to 43. These figures indicate that nearly half of the households with televisions turned on during the broadcast window were watching the Rays. The share metric measures the percentage of active television sets tuned to a specific program, rather than the total number of potential households in the market.
The strong performance extends beyond the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. WOFL FOX 35 in Orlando and WFTX FOX 4 in the Fort Myers-Naples region also reported high viewership for the first three games. This regional spread allowed fans across Central and Southwest Florida to access the coverage without relying solely on the primary Tampa market.
National metrics show similar strength for the franchise's television presence. Game 1 attracted more than 12 million viewers across the United States. Game 2 drew nearly 11 million viewers. Both broadcasts ranked as the most-watched television programs of their respective nights, providing the Tampa Bay market with widespread national exposure.
Local data from previous championship runs supports the current viewing patterns. During the 2020 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tampa-St. Petersburg market averaged a 15.2 household rating across the series. The decisive Game 6 also posted a 15.2 rating. While shifts in viewing habits make direct year-over-year comparisons difficult, the consistent engagement in October demonstrates a reliable audience base for postseason baseball.
The current ratings reflect a season-long accumulation of viewers. Rays games have been available through local television and streaming services throughout the regular season, establishing consistent viewing habits for fans. This ongoing exposure prepares the audience for the higher-stakes October games. The data shows that when championship stakes are introduced, the viewer base consolidates around the local broadcast network.
The financial implications for advertisers and the league are clear. A 43 share in a major market represents a concentrated audience that broadcasters can sell to at premium rates. The Rays' ability to command this level of attention confirms their value to the local television ecosystem. The opening games have set a high bar for the remainder of the series, with viewership figures continuing to lead local ratings.
