The Milwaukee Brewers captured their first World Series title this week, ending a 57-year championship drought. The team defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday, October 28, to close out the best-of-seven series. This victory marks the first title in franchise history and the second time Milwaukee has reached the Fall Classic since their 1982 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Despite the historic win, television ratings for the 2026 series fell short of recent standards. Preliminary estimates indicate an average audience of 11.82 million viewers across the Fox network. This figure is significantly lower than the 15.49 million viewers who watched the 2025 series and the 15.1 million for the 2024 championship, both of which were won by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Viewership fluctuated throughout the five-game series. Game 3, a 10-1 Milwaukee victory at Tampa, drew the lowest audience of 8.33 million. The final game, which secured the championship, peaked at 14.22 million viewers. Analysts point to the payrolls of the competing teams as a factor in the lower numbers. The Brewers rank 19th in the league with a $146 million payroll, while the Rays sit 28th at $95 million.
This matchup marked the first time in 35 years that two of baseball's smallest financial spenders met in the World Series. The Brewers represent the smallest market in Major League Baseball, generating the lowest local commercial and television revenue. The Rays operate in a mid-tier market. In contrast, the Dodgers, who won the last two titles, possess a large payroll and star players including Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, anchoring them in the top market tier.
The 2026 World Series numbers also lag behind other major American sports events this year. The NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs to end a 53-year drought, averaged 20.58 million viewers. Game 5 of that series attracted 24.54 million viewers, the highest for a Game 5 since 1998. In football, the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in North America drew a combined average of 62.8 million viewers on Fox and Telemundo, setting a record for the most-watched soccer match in the United States.
American football remains the dominant sport in viewership. The Super Bowl LX, which featured the Seattle Seahawks defeating the New England Patriots, was watched by an estimated 125.6 million people. This made it the second most-watched Super Bowl in history, trailing only the 2025 event which drew 127.7 million viewers. The National Hockey League is the only other major league that typically draws fewer viewers than MLB, with the 2026 Stanley Cup final averaging 5.2 million viewers as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights.
The league also canceled its planned London series this year. New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays games scheduled for June 13 and 14 at London Stadium were scrapped due to scheduling conflicts. West Ham United played its final Premier League match at the venue on May 24, leaving insufficient time for the three-week field conversion required for baseball. Additionally, Fox lacked available broadcast slots in late June because of its coverage of the FIFA World Cup.
Major US sports leagues continue to expand internationally. The NFL hosted its first regular-season game in Melbourne last month, which drew 100,021 fans. The NBA regularly plays games in cities like Paris and Abu Dhabi. MLB has hosted games in Japan, Australia, and Mexico, and recently launched a 3-on-3 competition called MLBx to promote the sport.
